Production4µ - Production for micro

Demonstrators

The demonstration work package plays a central role in the project, linking to RTD work, as well as to training and dissemination.

In the last two years the RTD will focus on long term technology solutions and process optimisation. In the meantime the OEMs and component suppliers will further intensify their collaboration within the demonstrator work to achieve breakthrough micro components for future high end products. Between year three and four the long term technologies and methodologies developed in the clusters will be implemented, tested and validated in the 3 demonstrator products.

These demonstrators are on the one hand representing µ-products with – from the production point of view – highly challenging µ-geometries, precision requirements and a high level of integration of multidisciplinary sciences. On the other hand they belong to the most promising high growth markets which require real industrialised mass production. In these product-fields European companies have the chance to become global players, if necessary research results are provided in a short term perspective as planned in Production4µ. In the following the selected demonstrators including target markets and selected µ-system features, which are relevant for µ-production design, are presented.

Aspherical-spherical lens
DEMO48-1 by Ingeneric

The first demonstrator that is being realized is a micro lens with an aspheric-spherical shape used for various high-power laser beam applications. Due to high power densities, such a lens has to be made out of glass material which has been difficult to achieve until now, with grinding and polishing production. The optical design is realised by Ingeneric.

Double side aspherical cylinder lens array
DEMO48-2 by FISBA

The double sided aspherical cylinder lens array is the second demonstrator. This element is planned to be used in innovative high power diode lasers for efficient beam symmetrisation of several light sources with significant unsymmetrical mode distribution. This type of laser is for example used in industrial applications as cutting, writing and welding as well as in medical apparatives. The extraordinary challenge of this demonstrator is the µ-geometrical feature of the aspheric double-sided cylinder array. The optical design is put into practice by Fisba.

Aspheric-diffractive lens
DEMO48-3 by VTT

The third demonstrator is a diffractive lens that is designed to improve the image quality of an optical system while employing less lens elements. It could for an example be used in high quality photography optics, mobile phone cameras or medical imaging and metrology. The diffractive structure of the aspheric lens features µ-geometry. The optical design is achieved by VTT.
